South Africa

Picture
Ultimate Without Borders is up and coming in South Africa. The program launched in March 2013 in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa by Shawn McDonald, a Peace Corps Volunteer working in the Education sector. Shawn teaches grades five and seven in a rural village in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. He has been in love with ultimate for the past eight years and is extremely motivated to teach the game to as many people as possible. Right now, Shawn is spreading the word about UWB and gaining support from other interested Peace Corps volunteers throughout South Africa. Shawn has facilitated two Training of Coaches (July in KZN and August in Limpopo) with a total of 17 volunteers.

Working with the curriculum from Panama, the South African revision includes a focus on conflict resolution and non-violence. These topics are important in the wake of Apartheid, because many young people see violence and aggression as the only way to resolve conflict.

Dai introduced ultimate to two schools around Pretoria and is currently launching the UWB curriculum at Langa High School in the Western Cape. Additionally, Dai introduced the game of ultimate to 20 local coaches who run after school programs in the Western Cape and is working in conjunction with the Cape Town Flying Disc Association to spread ultimate throughout the community.

Thanks to generous members of the ultimate community in the United States, more than 80 discs have already been distributed to Peace Corps volunteers in South Africa.
