The Strength-Based Approach

The Strength-Based Approach (SBA) is a model designed to help participants apply and develop the skills they have gained off the field. Similar to Appreciative Inquiry, the SBA is a youth development tool that highlights and utilizes individuals’ demonstrated strengths to increase potential for creating and accomplishing goals. By identifying and focusing on each individual’s strengths, values, and past successes, the SBA builds confidence and increases individuals’ motivation to achieve personal goals.
The SBA allows participants to build a positive and supportive environment where they feel safe to share their opinions and experiment with new ideas. The process in which participants work together to discover their strengths, values, and goals helps build a team with trust and purpose. Sharing a common goal fosters a sense of community amongst participants.
The SBA is an adaptable tool that encourages ownership, experimentation, and innovation. Simple to learn and easy to use, it drives a cycle of positive energy and creativity that brings out the best in coaches and players. Ultimate Frisbee and the SBA, when combined with the creativity of coaches and youth, have the power to transform lives and communities around the world.
